Part of being a mom is making sure that when my daughter (she's in Kindergarten) comes home from school, all of her possession and accessories make it home with her. This includes: her backpack, lunch bag, hat, jacket, sweater (in the colder weather she always wears two layers) and anything else that may have been imperative to bring that day. If you don't pay attention, then it is as good as gone.
Being a teacher myself, it amazes me the amount of clothing and personal items that end up in the Lost & Found. And what surprises me even more, is the amount of stuff donated to charity when it remains unclaimed!
There have been days that she has forgetten an article of clothing, or her lunch pail. She is on her second water bottle this year because she has no idea where the first one went. If she forgets clothing, then I write a letter to her teacher in her agenda asking that she go to the school's Lost & Found to retrieve it. If it still doesn't come home, then I go to the school and search for it in the Lost & Found, or her cubby. If she forgets her lunch pail, she gets her lunch in a plastic grocery bag (without a cold pack) until she remembers to bring it home.
I have given up trying to label all her clothing, because it gets really expensive and she goes through clothes so fast that it is hard to keep up. But all her other belongings get a label, in the hopes that if she does misplace or leave it somewhere, it will make its way back to her. This includes shoes, boots, sandals, water bottles (although we have no idea where her other one went!), jackets, hats, mitts, sunscreen, her lunch bag, etc.
Make a point of visiting the school's Lost & Found every so often - just in case. And if you haven't labelled your kids' belonging, please do!
