Finding Out The Sex of Your Baby

Does it really ruin the surprise, knowing what the sex of your baby will be before it is born? I don't think so.

My husband was so adamant that I agreed not to find out the sex of our first child. He wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted to know (I'm not a fan of delayed gratification!) and he convinced me to wait and find out.

The next one I really wanted to find out - so I did. But I kept it a secret from everyone else, since my husband still refused to know.

Our third, I told my husband that I would not find out. No one knew that I had found out the sex of the baby and I kept it a secret until I admitted that I had found out about 2 months ago (that baby is now 18 months old!)

For this fourth and final baby, we decided to find out the sex of the baby together. Having a gender reveal party was just a stroke of genius. If you didn't get to read them, you can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

My father-in-law decided not to attend our gender reveal party because he didn't want to ruin the surprise. (Although I don't know how I'm going to keep it from him. I'm sure I will start referring to the baby as 'he'). I didn't take offence to him choosing not to come and find out the sex of the baby, but it got me thinking....

I don't feel that knowing the sex of the baby beforehand lessens the excitement at all. I'm excited that the birth has gone well and that I have a beautiful new baby (plus the pain is over!). In the back of my mind I still remind myself that humans to make mistakes and I just might be surprised after all.

A regular ultrasound doesn't lessen the excitement either, in fact, it just adds to the anticipation. But I do believe that having a 3D ultrasound does ruin the surprise. I don't want to see my baby's face while it's still inside me. That is what I look forward to after I have given birth: to examine the baby's face and identify what features are mine and what are my husbands. It is a moment of pure joy to gaze upon the face of your child for the first time.
